Self-Indulgence

Posted by on Jun 30, 2008 in Cat Obsession, Monochrome, Photography | 18 comments

Although I try to publish those photos that I think others may enjoy seeing, sometimes I practice self-indulgence. That is usually the case with my cat photos. In bad weather when I cannot go out for pictures, I choose my favorite indoor subjects: The Basil, Rosemary, and Echo. (The first two are shown above. Echo, our third and oldest cat, was probably asleep somewhere.) This photograph was taken several years ago with a much older camera whose settings were not familiar to me, hence the lack of clarity. Still, I can’t resist their pose or the expressions on their faces.

I adored the rich coloring of these mountain-dwelling plants, so I buried my camera within them for a closeup.

Raindrops on Roses

One evening I decided to enjoy the post-rain evening cool by taking a walk through my neighborhood. When I saw this rosebush, I had to investigate further. After taking a variety of shots, I finally just stuck my camera inside a rose, focused, and took a few shots. This is the result.

Ant with Leaf

Posted by on Jun 6, 2008 in Desert, Macro, Photography, Wildlife | 5 comments

I went for a hike a few weeks ago, and stopped for a snack. As I cracked open my pistachio shells and nibbled, I looked around, admiring the scenery. And then I heard a faint scratching on the sandstone to my left. I looked down to see this tenacious ant trying to carry away a flake from the inside of one of my pistachios. It got pretty far before a breeze came, carrying the pistachio piece away. Poor guy.

If you walk along any given beach on any given day you may see people sunbathing, practicing yoga, and swimming. If you’re lucky, you’ll even find the rare gull practicing its kung fu technique.
