As readers of my regular blog know, I just got my first DSLR, a Nikon D60. It’s scary, but I love it, and I’ve been looking for every opportunity to go on photo shoots. The other day I went up into the mountains. I happened to be working on something else entirely (my book, if you must know) when I looked up and spotted a deer in the woods. I wasn’t quick enough on the draw, and switched to my zoom lens way too late. But it came back, and this time I was ready for it. Even with my zoom lens, it was still quite small, so I cropped it, and I have to say I was quite pleased with the detail I managed to get, even from that far away. I also captured a butterfly and a dragonfly, among other scenes, both of which you’ll see on here soon.

This reminds me of those photo-drawings where faces/animals are hiding in the picture and you have to find them. This deer is a part of the trees in the same way. Absolutely stunning, Caryn. Congratulations on your new camera!

What a beutiful picture. Spia hint is just perfect. It reveals lights and shadows on the trees, on gras and on the deer itself. Gorgeous.

Congratulations on the new D60. I’ve been a Nikon owner most of my life from SLR’s to DSLR’s and have now got my wife onboard as well.
What a first class photograph. Absolutely stunning in terms of perspective and processing. It’s a beautiful study

Wonderful shot! Despite the rush to catch the deer, the image enjoys perfect clarity. The composition is very cared as well. I also like the tone you have choosen, it brings out the texture of the deer.

A fine shot of this deer and the cropping didn’t hurt a bit! I love the toning too. Those extra pixels enable some cropping and manipulation that used to be nearly impossible. Enjoy your new camera.
